Victorian Travelling Rosewood Apothecary Cabinet

$64.91 $86.33
Description Brass Banded From our Apothecary Boxes collection, we are pleased to offer this substantial Victorian rosewood apothecary cabinet dating to circa 1840. Of large rectangular form, the cabinet is raised upon a double ribbed plinth base and finished with brass banding, a flush mounted loop carry handle and twin brass escutcheons. When unlocked, the right hand door opens first, allowing the left door to be released from the interior. Both doors fold outward to reveal a comprehensive fitted interior retaining numerous original pharmaceutical bottles, many with period labels and some still containing their contents. The interior doors house twelve glass bottles, while the central compartment drops forward using two turned bone handles, forming a stable platform supported by the handles acting as feet. This action reveals a further nine glass bottles alongside four fitted drawers. The drawers retain a rare survival of original dispensing equipment including scales, weights, a tablet crusher, storage tins, a pestle and mortar, glass jars and a measuring beaker, illustrating the practical working life of a nineteenth century medical practitioner. Crafted in richly grained rosewood and designed for both transport and professional use, this cabinet represents the quality associated with mid nineteenth century medical instruments and travelling apothecary sets. Measurements (inches) 11 High x 11.6 Wide x 7.9 Deep The Apothecary Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key. Literature Mark Goodger 25th Anniversary Catalogue p.68 Apothecary Apothecary is an English term for a medical professional who formulates and dispenses medicine. The modern terms ‘pharmacist’ and ‘chemist’ have taken over this role. Rosewood Rosewood has many variations. Indian Rosewood, also known as Bombay Rosewood or Bombay Blackwood, is found in India and Indonesia. It is highly valued for its striking appearance with colours ranging from a medium-brown to dark red-brown with even darker grain lines. Madagascan Rosewood, found in Madagascar is a pink-brown colour with a darker almost purple grain. For further information see our Woods Encyclopaedia on Rosewood.
