Description Black Forest Eagle Owl Tobacco Jar dating to the late 19th century, circa 1890. The eagle owl is finely carved and stands alert upon a rocky outcrop, with pronounced hooked beak, wide glass inset eyes and distinctive ear tufts. The feather work is deeply layered across the chest and wings, with careful attention given to the natural stance, talons and textured base. The rocky groundwork incorporates a small brass lined ash tray to one side and a hollowed vesta pocket to the other. The head is hinged at the neck, opening to reveal the original hollowed tobacco compartment within the body. A well executed Black Forest carving combining practical function with strong late nineteenth century naturalistic detail. Black Forest Black Forest carvings come with the common misconception that they are from Germany when they actually come from Switzerland. Originally named Brienzerware because of where it originated, the carvings became a type of grand tour souvenir and tourists would pick them up on their travels around Switzerland. The golden age of Black Forest Carvings dated around the 1900s and range from the most common being Bears to birds, dogs, gnomes and many other figures in a range of carvings from figures to tables and everything in-between.
