Description A Georgian sterling silver tea caddy by Peter and Ann Bateman, hallmarked London and dated 1795 during the reign of George III. The tea caddy is formed in an elegant oval shape with ribbed borders to both the base and upper rim, surmounted by a stepped lid finished with a distinctive green pineapple finial. The surface is extensively engraved in the neoclassical taste associated with late eighteenth century silver, incorporating draped garlands, scrolling foliage, flower heads and classical cartouches executed with confident hand engraving. The front panel is centred by a laurel wreath enclosing an armorial device depicting a sea horse or hippocamp, likely engraved as a commissioned crest for a maritime individual or family. Personalised engraving of this nature was common among high quality Georgian silver tea wares and reflects both ownership and status during a period when tea remained a valuable domestic commodity. The underside retains clear sterling silver hallmarks for London together with the maker’s mark of Peter and Ann Bateman and the date letter for 1795. The Bateman family workshop remains among the most respected names in late eighteenth century English silver, recognised for refined domestic wares produced during the Georgian period. A well preserved Georgian silver tea caddy combining strong engraving, clear hallmarks and association with one of London’s most important silversmithing families. View the full Tea Caddy Collection.
