Literature The Exceptional Collection Mark Goodger Antiques 28-29 J. A. Henckels Founded in 1731 in Solingen, Germany, J. A. Henckels is one of the oldest continuously operating cutlery manufacturers in the world. Originally established by Peter Henckels and later renamed under the leadership of his son, Johann Abraham Henckels, the company became known for its emblem of twin figures, one of the earliest registered trademarks in European craft history. By the 19th century, Henckels had expanded internationally with outlets in Berlin, New York and Vienna, gaining recognition at major exhibitions including the Great Exhibition of 1851 and receiving multiple international awards for knifemaking. The company also held a royal warrant as official supplier to the Imperial and Royal Court of Austria-Hungary. Today, J. A. Henckels remains a leading manufacturer of fine blades and precision steelwork, with its “Zwilling” mark still associated with Solingen’s long-standing reputation for quality craftsmanship. Art Deco was a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design that first appeared in France in the 1910s. It flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. It was hugely prevalent through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects and even influenced fashion and jewellery. Art Deco has influenced bridges, buildings, ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and everyday objects like radios and vacuum cleaners. It has become extremely popular today and is highly desirable to collectors and trendsetters in the fashion industry.
