Jewellery Box in Mahogany English Regency

$51.63 $102.74
Description Regency mahogany jewellery box dating to the early nineteenth century, circa 1810. The jewellery box is of rectangular form and constructed from solid mahogany, fitted throughout with brass mounted strapping across the front, lid, and rear. Each mount is secured using original steel flat head screws, a detail frequently encountered on early nineteenth century English boxes. The exterior is centred by a rectangular brass escutcheon with inverted corners, maintaining the restrained proportions associated with the Regency period. Opening the box reveals a fully fitted interior lined in steel grey cushioned silk velvet. The removable upper tray is arranged with four watch compartments bordered by twin cushioned tracks designed for cufflinks or rings. Beneath, the main storage compartment is divided into three larger sections suitable for necklaces, bracelets, and other personal jewellery. A well proportioned Regency mahogany jewellery box with a fitted interior and practical configuration. The Jewellery Box comes complete with working lock and tasselled key View the full Jewellery Box Collection. View the full Boxes Collection. Mahogany Mahogany is the name given to many types of tropical hardwood and can be found in Africa, India and South America, most of which are a red-brown colour with a fine, even grain. This makes it easily workable and gives it a durable finish which attributes to its popularity with many kinds of furniture. For further information see our Woods Encyclopaedia on Mahogany. Regency  Regency period is an era of British history between 1811 and 1820. The Regency era was initiated by King George III first suffered a debilitating illness in the late 1780s. He relapsed into his mental illness in 1810 and by the Regency Act in 1811 his eldest son George, Prince of Wales, was appointed prince regent to discharge royal functions. When George III died in 1820, the Prince Regent succeeded him as George IV. Jewellery / Jewelery / Jewelry In the UK and Australia the English spelling rule states that the final consonant of a word should be doubled when its added suffix begins with a vowel. Therefore the spelling ‘jewellery’ is used. This rule usually applies to instances where the final syllable ends with a vowel followed by a single consonant such as: Jeweller. The spelling variation ’Jewelry’ is thought to have had some popularity as a preferred ‘poetic’ or ‘rhetorical’ spelling in British English. ‘Jewellery and Jewelery’ is used in the US, the confusion continues with the correct spelling variant being ’Jewelery’ according to the Oxford English Dictionary.
