Antique Jewellery Box in Burr Walnut Victorian Period

$67.12 $83.23
Description Antique burr walnut jewellery box dating to the early Victorian period, circa 1860. The jewellery box is of rectangular form with a gently domed lid and veneered throughout in burr walnut displaying strong natural figuring across the exterior. The lid is centred by a circular brass vacant initial plaque engraved with a tulip border, repeated to the matching circular escutcheon at the front. Opening the box reveals a fitted interior lined in dark royal blue cushioned velvet with contrasting cream ruched velvet to the lid finished with gold tooling. The inner lid releases to form a drop down compartment accessed via a small tab and latch mechanism, providing additional concealed storage. The removable upper tray is arranged with multiple jewellery partitions together with parallel twin ring or cufflink holders. Two brass loop handles allow the tray to be lifted easily, revealing further storage space beneath suitable for larger items. A well proportioned Victorian jewellery box combining practical interior arrangement with attractive burr walnut veneer. View the full Jewellery Box Collection. View the full Boxes Collection. Burr Walnut Burr Walnut also known as figured Walnut is a highly prized wood which is formed by a growth deformation resulting from stress, disease or nurturing the tree in a specific way. Burr can be developed by blocking the sap flow of the tree by means of putting a French Walnut on top of the roots of an American Walnut. Due to the unusual properties, it is rare to come across a Walnut tree growing this way in the wild. Nurturing planted trees takes at least 80 years before it is mature enough to be cut for good purpose. Burr Walnut is highly desired for their unusual grain and pattern, used mostly in veneering larger pieces such as furniture would be joined by matching the veneer pieces or blending them together. For further information see our woods encyclopaedia on Burr Walnut. Victorian Victorian period is an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era. Jewellery / Jewelery / Jewelry In the UK and Australia the English spelling rule states that the final consonant of a word should be doubled when its added suffix begins with a vowel. Therefore the spelling ‘jewellery’ is used. This rule usually applies to instances where the final syllable ends with a vowel followed by a single consonant such as: Jeweller. The spelling variation ’Jewelry’ is thought to have had some popularity as a preferred ‘poetic’ or ‘rhetorical’ spelling in British English. ‘Jewellery and Jewelery’ is used in the US, the confusion continues with the correct spelling variant being ’Jewelery’ according to the Oxford English Dictionary.
