The box veneered in exotic Calamander wood edged in brass with double strung brass borders to the front and lid. To each side solid brass carry handles feature with unusual diamond shaped veneered Calamander windows. The exterior is finished with a vacant initial plaque to the lid and two barrel escutcheons. When opened the Vanity Box reveals a ruched velvet inner lid with drop down storage compartment which is embossed with gold tooling and signed F. L. Hausburg, the facing of the vanity box is beautifully inlaid with shaped strengthening brackets with ball and line stringing. The top of the Vanity box contains eleven silver lidded jars for various purposes and a central removable tool tray. The silver is hallmarked Sterling by Frances Douglas of London and dated 1849. The tool tray is fitted with various Mother of Pearl handled tools and sits within a removable tray which can be lifted out to access a larger storage area below along with a removable rear bottle tray. The top of the vanity box is fitted with a lock plate by S. Mordan and Co. featuring the royal warrant crown. The bottom tray can be accessed by inserting the key and pulling the drawer forward to reveal a fully partitioned jewellery drawer with four lift up earring slots, ring slots and watch pad amongst other storage areas. Calamander is variant of Coromandel, a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special.
