Art Deco The Art Deco period developed in the early twentieth century, reaching its height between the 1920s and 1930s. It was characterised by a strong emphasis on geometry, symmetry, and modern materials, reflecting advances in industry, design, and technology following the First World War. Art Deco drew influence from sources including classical antiquity, Cubism, Egyptian art, and the machine age, resulting in bold yet refined forms. In decorative arts and luxury objects, Art Deco makers favoured clean lines, stepped profiles, and stylised natural motifs, often combined with high quality materials such as silver, glass, exotic woods, lacquer, and stone. The style was widely adopted across Europe and the United States and became closely associated with modern living, travel, and social refinement during the interwar period.
