The box of rectangular form made from Sycamore wood and modelled as a cottage with an apex roof and chimney. The Cottage is painted to the exterior with traditional leaded windows, a front and back door, trees and foliage and it is finished with a rare ladder, rake and bird cage. When opened the Novelty Cottage Sewing Box reveals the original pink lining and compartments for storing sewing accoutrements with various threads and accessories, the top tray is removable and allows access to the lower storage compartment. The Tunbridge Ware Cottage Sewing Box is a rare example of early Tunbridge Ware with painted decoration dating to the Georgian period during the reign of George III Circa 1800. The later Tunbridge Ware features inlaid woods which is more commonly recognised. A similar example and most probably by the same hand can be seen at the Victoria & Albert Museum London. The Sewing Box comes complete with working lock and tasselled key.
