Description Regency Circa 1815  From our Boxes collection, we are pleased to offer this rare colour Chinoiserie Yellow Japanned Basket. The Basket of petit form with a yellow lacquer ground decorated with japanned figures and painted pin striping. The top of the basket has a hinged lid decorated with a Chinoiserie scenes depicting a figure in the foreground with foliage and a building to the background with a peacock in the tree. The lid of the basket is surmounted by a turned bone handle and the exterior of the basket is finished with a matching carry handle painted with further pin striping detail which can be pivoted from the front to back. The interior of the basket is fitted with three partitioned sections for storage and the Chinoiserie Basket dates to the early 19th century during the short-lived Regency era (1811-1820) and the reign of Prince George circa 1815. Measurements (Inches) 2.17 High (6.1) x 6.7 Wide x 4.9 Deep Chinoiserie is a decorative style in Western art, furniture, and architecture that was undertaken particularly in the 18th century. It is characterised by the use of Chinese motifs and techniques hence the name Chinoiserie. Japanned (Japanning) in the decorative arts is a process that was very popular in 18th-century Europe for finishing and ornamenting wood, leather, tin, and papier-mâché in imitation of the celebrated lacquerwork of the Japanese. Regency is an era of British history between 1811 and 1820. The Regency era was initiated by King George III first suffered a debilitating illness in the late 1780s. He relapsed into his mental illness in 1810 and by the Regency Act in 1811 his eldest son George, Prince of Wales, was appointed prince regent to discharge royal functions. When George III died in 1820, the Prince Regent succeeded him as George IV.
